Knowledge Is For Sharing - And So Are Life's Experiences...

A PhD is more about the journey than the destination. The road is long and challenging, and there are several mountains to climb along the way.
The purpose of this blog is to share my experiences as a mature PhD student and discuss the key issues around my research that I hope others will find at least mildly interesting!

Hi There!

I'm Chris Kent and I'm passionate about helping entrepreneurs and small-business owners get to grips with the challenges of modern marketing.

My particular area of interest is around the global digital marketing skills gap and how it affects small businesses - particularly micro-businesses.  Quite often the small business owner has to play the role of the Marketing, Sales, or Business Development Manager in their business - but rarely have the skills to do it.

So what do we need to do to fix that problem? Particularly when training is so expensive, time and budgets are limited, and it's difficult to know where to start - especially as the digital world moves so fast!

The internet was supposed to level the playing field and and make it easier to succeed. But what's gone wrong? Small business start-up failure rates are still incredibly high. Business failures are not just statistics, they destroy the lives of real people who put their heart and soul into turning their business dream into reality - as I found out to my cost when my first business failed when I was in my 20's!

Some Burning Questions...

  • Why do so many small businesses fail?
  • How can we reverse the small business failure rates and turn them into small business success rates?
  • If there's just one thing that small business owners could do to increase their chance of success, what is it?
  • What can we do to support these heroes of the modern economy and improve the fortunes of the entire country?
  • Can the government do more to support small start-up businesses?  If so what?

That's precisely what I intend to find out as I work towards my PhD...
